Arsene Wenger is the latest manager to pay tribute to Steven Gerrard, who announced his retirement on Thursday.
The Arsenal boss expressed his surprise that the former Liverpool skipper had called time on his playing career at the age of 36.
Wenger said: "For me, he was a huge player. It was a bit surprising because I thought he had two or three more years left in him.
"I thought he would play until 40. He was a fantastic player who had the qualities that every midfielder dreams of.
"On top of that, he was loyal to Liverpool. It's a quality that you don't find a lot these days."
On Sunday, Arsenal entertain Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium, although on-loan Gunner Jack Wilshere is ineligible to face his parent club.
But the Frenchman praised his midfielder, by saying his move to the south coast has turned out well for the 24-year-old.
"I am happy that he is developing well. It was a good decision for him to go to get regular football," said Wenger.
"From observations I get from people watching him, he is getting stronger every week and that is exactly what he needed.
"He's getting regular football. When a player like Jack is in top form, you miss him."
