Patrick Vieira was left disappointed at Arsenal's 'token gesture' after being contacted about the vacant managerial position at the club, say Sky sources.
The former Arsenal captain, who made 406 appearances for the Gunners during a nine-year spell in north London, has been touted as a possible successor to Arsene Wenger, who stepped down from his role at the end of the season after 22 years in charge.
However, Sky Sports News understands Manchester City assistant coach Mikel Arteta is now the favourite for the role.
Vieira, who is currently head coach of MLS side New York City FC, was left disappointed after speaking with the club and feels the call was merely a token gesture to one of their former players.
Sky sources understand Vieira's former team-mate Thierry Henry has not been contacted about the vacant role.
Former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique is reportedly interested in succeeding Wenger at the Emirates, but his wage demands are putting Arsenal off.
Arsenal are expected to begin the interview process this week in the hope a new manager will be in place before the start of the World Cup on June 14.
