Tottenham have confirmed the signing of forward Clinton Njie from Lyon.

The Cameroon international has signed a five-year deal - on his 22nd birthday - although the transfer is still subject to a work permit.

Njie's arrival comes less than 24 hours after Roberto Soldado's return to Spain was rubber-stamped and gives Spurs back-up to Harry Kane.

The other senior striker on the club's books, Emmanuel Adebayor, does not even have a squad number for this season.

Njie, who has six goals in 11 games for his country and helped Lyon to a second-placed finish in France last season, can operate at centre-forward or from either wide position.

He told the club's official website: "I'm very happy to join Tottenham, such a big club in England. I'm still young, still growing up and it’s a big challenge - the Premier League is one of the biggest leagues in the world.

"The club is ambitious and I’m ready to give my best to help the club achieve its aims. Like I said, I’m still learning and I’m here to give my best. I just hope I get the chance to give to the club what they are giving to me."
