Paul Cook has signed a four-year contract as Wigan manager after leading the club back to the Sky Bet Championship.
The club were keen to secure Cook's future after a campaign which also saw Wigan reach the FA Cup quarter-finals after victories over three Premier League sides - including Manchester City.
He has put pen to paper on the same day Sky Sports News understands the Whelan family have agreed a deal in principle to sell their majority stake at Wigan to a Hong Kong-based consortium.
"I'm absolutely delighted to see Paul commit his long-term future to Wigan Athletic, he has been the main reason behind our success this year," Sharpe said.
Cook said he has "loved every minute" of his time at Wigan.
"It was always going to be a big challenge to win promotion immediately but a lot of hard work and endeavour has gone in from so many people, who can all look back on the past year with great pride," he said.
"I sit here very proud of the success we have enjoyed this season but in equal measure aware of the challenges we face moving forwards into the Championship - an exciting challenge."
