Brentford’s hierarchy will meet on Thursday to discuss Dean Smith’s successor and current assistant head coach Thomas Frank is already a contender, Sky Sports News understands.

Frank, who has managed Brondby and a succession of Denmark youth teams, will train the team in the interim period.

Brentford would have no concerns about letting him take charge of their next championship game - against Bristol City on October 20.

The players will also be addressed on the situation at Jersey Road on Thursday before being given time off over the international break.

Aston Villa appoint Smith, Terry

Smith's switch to Villa was sudden but not surprising for the west London club - the 47-year-old informing them of his wish to move on Wednesday - but he leaves with their blessing.
