Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa is upping his work-rate as he closes in on a return to first-team football following his move from Chelsea

Diego Costa has stepped up his training at Atletico Madrid following his transfer from Premier League champions Chelsea.

The striker completed his return to Atletico from the Blues - for a fee believed to be in the region of £50m - last month, although the deal does not take effect until January 1 due to the La Liga side's transfer ban.

Costa fell out of favour at Stamford Bridge after being told by Antonio Conte he was surplus to requirements at the end of last season, while Chelsea brought in Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata for £70m as his replacement.

As a result, the Spain international refused to return to Chelsea following the summer break, instead remaining in Brazil as he targeted a permanent transfer to former side Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish side reached an agreement with Chelsea for Costa on September 26, one day prior to the Blues' 2-1 Champions League win over Atletico at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Costa has now linked up with his team-mates and is in full training ahead of his return to action in the new year.
