Ajax have announced the Amsterdam ArenA will officially become known as the Johan Cruyff ArenA from the beginning of next season.

The former Netherlands international won eight Dutch league titles and three European Cups during two spells with Ajax as a player and later went on to manage the club for three seasons between 1985 and 1988.

Cruyff passed away in March 2016 at the age of 68 following a long battle with lung cancer.

The new logo of the stadium will be unveiled on April 25, the day on which Cruyff would have turned 71.

A Cruyff family statement read: "We are pleased with this news, and that the stadium can be officially named the Johan Cruyff ArenA from the new football season."

Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar added: "Johan Cruyff is the biggest football player that Ajax has produced.
