Gareth Southgate is in talks regarding a new contract with England, Sky Sports News understands.

Negotiations are advancing between the 48-year-old and the FA over improved terms that would hand him a significant pay-rise and extend his reign to include the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

FA bosses are keen to reward Southgate for England's success in Russia, where the team reached the World Cup semi-finals, as well as tighten his terms to make it harder for him to be poached by a club.

Southgate's current deal expires in 2020 and Sky Sports News understands the matter will be discussed by the FA at a board meeting on Thursday, but no decision or vote will be taken then.

Thursday's meeting is understood to focus more on progress reportage, to outline the terms being discussed and keep board members abreast of the situation.

FA chief executive Martin Glenn said at the start of last month that he wanted to sit down and discuss a new deal with Southgate as soon as possible - and the ex-Middlesbrough boss also said a fortnight ago that initial discussions had been held.

A provisional £600m deal for Fulham and Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan to buy Wembley will also be presented at Thursday's meeting of the FA's 10 board members, who must decide whether to give it their backing ahead of submission for FA Council approval next month.

On the eve of the meeting, the FA also announced that its highly-rated technical director Dan Ashworth - a target for Manchester United - had left his role to take up a similar position at Premier League Brighton.
