Wayne Rooney is confident DC United can beat anyone after reaching play-offs

Wayne Rooney

Two-goal hero Wayne Rooney says DC United will be full of confidence when they head into the MLS play-offs.

Rooney scored twice in a 3-1 win against New York City as DC United completed a remarkable turnaround to clinch a play-off berth.

DC had won two matches in 14 before the former Everton and Manchester United striker joined, but Sunday night's win was the franchise's 12th victory in their last 19 games.

If DC beat Chicago Fire next Sunday their play-off game will be at home, but Rooney insists his side are capable of beating anyone, irrespective of where they play.

"Of course it (home-field advantage) can be important," Rooney told the DC United website.

Rooney gave DC United an early lead against New York City

"Obviously our form here is great but if we host a game or we don't we have to be confident in whoever we play, wherever we play that we can win the game.

"We are in great form, whether it's a home or away we have to take that belief into that game and be ready whether it is here or away."

Rooney then turned provider for Luciano Acosta to score DC United's second

Rooney was also involved in the other DC United goal against New York City, when he laid on Luciano Acosta to score his 10th goal of the season.

Asked if has developed an immediate connection with Argentinean, Rooney said: "I think we just enjoy playing with each other. We both play to each other's strengths, he's the one who is going to get the ball and run at defenders.

"For me it is quite simple, he comes in a bit away from the goal, give him the ball and then get in the box. It is great to play with players like that because you know they are always going to create your chances and create chances for themselves."
