Sky Bet League Two 2018/19 Team of the Season so far

Three Exeter players and eight other clubs feature in the Sky Bet League Two Team of the Season.

The 2018/19 Sky Bet League Two season has well and truly taken shape after 12 games.

Lincoln are dominating at the top of the table while Macclesfield are struggling at the bottom, but which players have impressed the most?

Here, Gabriel Sutton @_FootbalLab from WhoScored provides us with his Team of the Season so far...

Goalkeeper: Christy Pym - Exeter

Exeter City have lost only two League Two games and, in the 1-0 defeat at MK Dons, Pym was very unlucky to be on the losing side; he saved one of the two penalties he faced.

Although the stopper is only 23, he is certainly not inexperienced, having started 135 games for the Grecians during a five-year period in which he has proved one of the most consistent goalkeepers in League Two. Many fans were delighted to see Pym stay on in the summer and on this evidence, it is easy to see why.

Centre-back: Jordan Moore-Taylor - MK Dons

One of the main coups Paul Tisdale pulled off after being appointed Milton Keynes Dons boss in the summer was bringing Jordan Moore-Taylor with him from Exeter. The 24-year-old might only be 5ft10in, but he has great upper-body strength and has a passing range that is better than most midfielders at this level.

Goalkeeper Lee Nicholls is rarely called upon in most games and much of that is down to Moore-Taylor's excellent organizational qualities.

Centre-back: Michael Bostwick - Lincoln

Bostwick's performance against Swindon on week two summed up his importance to Lincoln City. After dominating the opposing striker through aerial strength, he was then asked to move into midfield, where he was equally influential by showing his battling qualities.

Danny Cowley's side are playing with more pace and incision than we saw last season, but retain the brutish fearlessness that makes them such a force at this level and Bostwick continues to be a vital cog in a well-oiled Imps machine.

Centre-back: George Edmundson - Oldham

Oldham managed a meagre four away clean sheets last season; it is only October and they have already kept five this term! They are in a lower division, of course, but Frankie Bunn and Andy Rhodes deserve credit for re-organising the team on the road and Edmundson has been a big part of that.

The 21-year-old has developed superbly following a successful loan spell at AFC Fylde last season and, helped by the guidance of the more experienced Peter Clarke, he has a bright future ahead.

Right wing-back: Ryan Jackson - Colchester

The former Newport man's impressive long throws were a key factor behind Colchester's fine early-season form; notably, one led to a crucial late equaliser in August's 1-1 draw at Mansfield.

A very athletic right-back, Jackson has played the full 90 minutes in every league game this season and has chipped in with well-taken strikes against Port Vale and Crewe.

Central midfielder: Nicky Law - Exeter

A League One play-off finalist with Bradford as recently as 2017, Law is already proving a high-pedigree performer at this level.

What he perhaps lacks in obvious physical attributes, he more than makes up for with a good work ethic, clever passing and subtle movement between the lines which creates space for his teammates. The former Rangers man already has three goals to his name and looks one of the League Two signings of the summer.

Central midfielder: Lloyd James - Forest Green

Manager Mark Cooper has always been a keep-ball connoisseur, but it is possible that last season, he didn't quite have the personnel to execute his methods as effectively as he might have liked.

Thanks to James' summer arrival from Exeter though, Cooper now has a midfield metronome capable of collecting the ball from the defence before offering the kind of composure and quality that has enabled Forest Green Rovers to take control of most games. A vital addition for the EFL's last remaining unbeaten side.

Left wing-back: Dan Butler - Newport

After coming through Portsmouth's academy, the left-back had to briefly drop into non-league with Torquay, but has since returned to prove he is more than capable of playing in the EFL.

Butler won Newport County's Young Player of the Year award in 2017/18 and has continued that form this year; a hat-trick of assists in the 4-2 win over Cambridge offers a clear example of the quality of delivery he can produce.

Attacking midfield: Danny Mayor - Bury

In pre-season, a lot of Bury fans questioned whether Mayor could replicate the 2014/15 form that won him the League Two Player of the Season award; the subsequent stagnation in performance levels had not been helped by injury issues.

In fact, the attacking midfielder has been back to his sparkling best in 2018/19 so far, scoring three goals including a beautiful curler in his brace in the 4-0 win over Grimsby. The free role in Ryan Lowe's 3-4-1-2 system appears to suit Mayor to a tee, because while others do the legwork, he has the licence to roam and create at will.

Striker: Jayden Stockley - Exeter

For much of Paul Tisdale's 12-year tenure, Exeter City had a reputation for keeping the ball on the deck. Since target man Stockley returned for his second spell with the club last summer though, we have started to see signs that they are more willing to go long when the moment arises and that theme has been even more prominent during Matt Taylor's reign.

Stockley's aerial prowess is therefore crucial for the Grecians and while sometimes he has combined well with strike-partner Jonathan Forte, he has proved equally capable as a lone striker, scoring eight goals in 12 league games.

Striker: Ollie Palmer - Crawley

At Lincoln last season, Palmer was one of just five players in the top four leagues of English football to reach double-figures in all competitions without starting more than 15 games; Olivier Giroud, Michy Batshuayi, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Callum Lang being the other four.

After signing for Crawley Town, the tall, yet mobile, striker is beginning to prove why he is worthy of starting every week at this level, with seven goals already as the Sussex side eye a play-off push under new manager, Gabriele Cioffi.

Manager: Dino Maamria - Stevenage

during the pre-season friendly match between Stevenage and Crystal Palace at The Lamex Stadium on July 24, 2018 in Stevenage, England.

Stevenage showed flashes of real potential in 2017/18 but when the football didn't flow, they relied on inexperienced players to hold things together and that's where perhaps the lack of leadership became problematic. Over the summer, Maamria eradicated those issues with aplomb.

He added battle-hardened campaigners like ball-winner Michael Timlin and centre-back Scott Cuthbert, who have helped Boro keep five clean sheets - the joint-most in the division. That solidity has meant it has only taken one moment of magic, which has often come from wide forward Ben Kennedy, to secure wins that have seen the Hertfordshire outfit soar to fifth.
