Andy Robertson admits Scotland fell way below their best against England but insists the three points picked up last Friday was their main target over the international break.
The Hull City full-back, who scored Scotland's goal in their 3-1 defeat at Celtic Park, refused to blame fatigue due to the short recovery time following their 1-0 European Qualifier victory over the Republic of Ireland at the same venue.
Last Friday was a massive game for Scotland but we should have had time to recover by Tuesday. I think it was just a poor performance.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, the former Dundee United defender said: "It was a tough match for us but we never really got going while England were on top of their game.
"If we had got going, we may have caused them problems. It's never nice to lose but Friday was the big one for us and we got the three points there.
"England have players from the top four teams in the Premier League throughout their side, we only had two or three from the division but that's not the issue. We just didn't play as well as we could have."
And the 20-year-old, who was on Celtic's books as a youngster, dismissed suggestions the squad were tired after last week's exertions against the Irish, saying no one in the squad is looking for reasons for the poor showing.
He said: "People can argue that but I don't think we are looking for excuses. The boys in the changing room were bitterly disappointed that we didn't perform to the best of our ability. That was the most annoying thing, but no-one could say England didn't deserve to win.
"Last Friday was a massive game for Scotland but we should have had time to recover by Tuesday. I think it was just a poor performance.
"But it was a great occasion. The fans turned out in their numbers and we are just sad we didn't send them home happy. England brought up a good support as well which is good for them."
Robertson, who was speaking at his old school - St Joseph's Primary in Glasgow - as an ambassador for Tesco Bank Football Challenge, an initiative which helps youngsters become involved in football, is now looking to kickstart his season with Hull after missing the last three games through injury.
"All I can hope is that I can get back in the team," he said. "I came up here and all I hoped was that Gordon would give me the nod to play as there's nothing more frustrating for a player than not to play.
"I dont know what will happen when I go back to Hull. I just have to train as hard as I can and see who the manager picks. It's a massive game against Tottenham and we will be very wary of them, but hopefully we can get the three points."
