Reds see off League One opponents

A 43rd minute Yossi Benayoun drive proved the difference as Liverpool comfortably won their first pre-season friendly of the summer against Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park on Saturday. Boss Rafa Benitez had an emphasis firmly on youth for the game, with Spanish teenager Danny Pacheco, the former Barcelona junior, playing up front, and youngsters Stephen Darby, Jack Hobbs, Damien Plessis, goalkeeper David Martin and Emiliano Insua also making appearances. Reds fans had their first view of new signings Diego Cavalieri and Philipp Degen, who were introduced at the break, and also welcomed back defender Daniel Agger for his first game in nine months following a metatarsal injury. But - perhaps significantly - transfer targets Steve Finnan and Scott Carson were absent from the Reds' 21-man squad.

Full house

A 15,000 full house saw Liverpool very much in control of the game, exhibiting better passing, movement and control than their League One opponents, who had new names John Curtis, George O'Callaghan, Bas Savage and Edrissa Sonko on show. Benayoun's 20-yard drive gave Liverpool the win, while Blackburn target Jermaine Pennant hit the bar. Tranmere went close when Andy Taylor's free-kick clipped the foot of Martin's left-hand post before the break. Liverpool made seven changes at the break, while Steven Gerrard was among the second-half substitutes.
