Hutchings held on first outing
Walsall's new manager Chris Hutchings had to be satisfied with a draw from his first match at the helm.
Troy Deeney had given Hutchings the perfect start, but Steve Guinan's penalty earned struggling Hereford a deserved point.
The visitors saw two efforts cleared off the line in the early stages.
Chris Palmer headed clear after Walsall keeper Clayton Ince had missed his punch trying to deal with a Matt Done free-kick and Manny Smith was on hand to block an effort from Andy Williams.
Walsall then took the lead as Deeney converted after a good run and cross by recalled winger Sofiene Zaaboub.
Deeney saw a shot come back off the post shortly after the interval, before Hereford levelled in the 59th minute.
Mark Bradley tripped Done on the edge of the box and Guinan hammered in the resulting spot-kick.
In the dying moments, Bradley missed a golden chance for Walsall when he somehow headed over from point-blank range.
