Former Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta hopes his old club can overcome Liverpool and win a fourth Premier League title

West Ham full-back Pablo Zabaleta is desperate for his former club Manchester City to fend off Liverpool and retain the Premier League title.

Liverpool stayed top on Wednesday night heading into this weekend's Merseyside derby, live on Sky Sports Premier League on Super Sunday, after a thumping 5-0 win against Watford.

City remain a point behind Liverpool after edging West Ham 1-0 at the Etihad and are still in the hunt for what would be a stunning quadruple, having lifted the Carabao Cup last weekend.

"I hope Manchester City [can lift the title], I wish they can win it but I know it is going to be tough," Zabaleta said.

"Liverpool look like they are also very focused on the Premier League, so it looks like it's going to be between Manchester City and Liverpool until the end

"But obviously all I wish is Manchester City to win. They have three competitions to play for, and hopefully they can win all of them."

Zabaleta won five major trophies including two Premier League titles during a nine-year stay at City, and was given a rapturous ovation from both sets of supporters when he came on at the Etihad as a 63rd-minute substitute for Ben Johnson.

"It was really special and I always appreciate the love from Manchester City fans," he added.

"I spent nine seasons at the club, so it was a really nice moment and it's always special to come back to the Etihad. And I also wish them all the best until the end of the season."
