Wayne Rooney was forced off after 18 minutes in DC United's pre-season friendly 1-0 win over Bethlehem Steel after suffering a shin injury.

Rooney collided with the opposition goalkeeper after sliding in for the ball after 10 minutes and returned to the field of play after getting treatment, but removed himself minutes later.

The striker, whose mid-season arrival last year helped lift United from the Major League Soccer basement into a playoff spot, was removed as a precaution, according to the club.

Rooney deemed the injury minor and said it was similar to previous injuries he had suffered in his career, according to the Washington Post.

He is expected to recover in time for Thursday's pre-season game against new MLS expansion club FC Cincinnati, according to DC United, who also said he was taken off as a precaution.

Meanwhile, Luciano Acosta travelled with the team to Florida but did not feature after his failed Deadline Day move to French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Sky Sports News understands Acosta travelled to Paris for talks, however, the transfer never materialised.

Former Manchester United striker Rooney said he planned to speak to Acosta and had some advice for his strike partner.

"He needs to keep motivated," Rooney said. "He's a professional player; I'm sure he will.

"He now knows what kind of teams are interested in him. If he continues performing up to his ability, he will get there. He's young and he's talented - one of the best I've played with."
