Lyon head coach Bruno Genesio will leave the Ligue 1 club at the end of the season after three and a half years at the helm.

The 52-year-old announced his departure at an impromptu press conference on Saturday, following weeks of speculation over his future.

Genesio said: "For some time, I have faced a negative climate, which can be a drag on the players and the club.

"I informed my players this morning, (and now) I'm counting on everyone to (support) the team."

Genesio added he intends to take a break from management, although he suggested he could remain at Lyon in a different capacity.

Genesio had reportedly agreed a new two-year deal with Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas, but that was before three successive defeats, including their exit in the semi-finals of the French Cup.

Lyon's fans jeered the players and called for Genesio's departure during their 3-1 home defeat to Dijon last weekend.

Lyon are currently third in Ligue 1, which would guarantee them a place in the Champions League qualifying rounds next season.

Genesio had been reported to be on Newcastle's shortlist to replace Rafa Benitez, should the Spaniard leave St James's Park when his contract expires at the end of the season.
