Kane says his goal against Switzerland is his most important England goal to date following his side's 2-0 win

Harry Kane insists he will aim to break Wayne Rooney's England goal scoring record after hitting his third goal in four caps in Tuesday night's 2-0 win over Switzerland.

The Tottenham striker, who came off the bench just before the hour mark, scored 10 minutes later to put England 1-0 up, before Rooney broke Sir Bobby Charlton's England record from the penalty spot for his 50th goal.

Kane, who is seven years younger than Rooney at 22, says the Manchester United striker is the benchmark, and hopes to have a good go at chasing him down.

Rooney says it is incredible to become England's leading goalscorer and insists he will never forget such a special night

He told Sky Sports: "That's the aim, Rooney has set the mark and will probably go on to score quite a few more hopefully for us.

"We'll see where he ends up and hopefully I'll be chasing him down. It's a huge honour [to celebrate with him], I grew up watching him score goals for England, so to share that moment with him on the pitch, it's a special moment for me as well.

"I'm sure he's very proud of what he has achieved and I'm sure he can go on and get many more for England."

Kane's two goals in two games from the bench for England has given him a much-needed boost after receiving criticism for his form so far with Spurs in the Premier League.

Having hit 31 goals in all competitions last term, he is yet to get off the mark in 2015/16 for Mauricio Pochettino's men, but says his self-confidence always remains high.

"Any striker wants to be scoring goals, so it's great to come away and get a couple goals. I'll go back and focus on Spurs, but if I don't score at the weekend it's not the end of the world.

"I've just got to stay focused and keep doing the right things and stay calm. I've just got to keep doing the right things.

"Confidence is high, it always has been. I'm a very self-confident striker, and when I get a chance I feel like I'm going to score.

"Hopefully I can get some chances for club now and starts scoring goals and really kick on this season."
