Sunderland’s impressive start to life back in the Premier League continued as the Wearsiders beat winless Wolves 2-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Regis Le Bris's well-drilled team have now earned 10 points from their first four home matches of a top-flight campaign for the first time since 1968-69 and despite sustained second-half Wolves pressure, were worth their hard-earned victory.

Player of the Match: Nordi Mukiele

Sunderland opened the scoring after a lovely passing move involving both full-backs as Nordi Mukiele and Trai Hume played a neat one-two on the edge of the area, with the former sweeping home from close range, albeit with a helping hand - literally - from Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

The visitors struggled dealing with a series of long Mukiele throws throughout the first period, one of which nearly produced a second goal after a flick on fell to the unmarked Hume at the back post, only for the right back's close-range header to strike the outside of the post.

    Team news:

    • Sunderland brought in Dan Ballard and Chris Rigg for Arthur Masuaku and Simon Adingra
    • Matt Doherty and Rodrigo Gomes were given starts by Wolves

Vitor Pereira would have been pleased with his players' response to a lacklustre first 45 minutes, but with no end product, his side were undone again in stoppage time as the hosts broke, with the unfortunate Ladislav Krejci diverting an intended through ball past his own 'keeper.

    What the managers said...

    Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris:

    Also See:

"Important win, tough win. I think we started well. I'm really pleased with the first half, it was like expected.

"We had our game plan, managed the press, created chances, generated strong momentum. We scored once, which was positive, but my regret is we didn't score the second goal.

Nordi Mukiele gives Sunderland a first-half lead against Wolves

"It's normal to expect after this first half a reaction from our opponent. They did well second half so it was totally different.

"But we defended together, showed this togetherness again, this ability to suffer together and kept this clean sheet, which is positive."

    Wolves boss Vitor Pereira:

"I look for my team and I see a team mentally connected with good spirit, with character, trying the best to change the situation.

"If you remember the last game, we had two chances to score the second goal against Brighton. We didn't and after we conceded the goal.

"This is the moment that we need to change with a win. We must win the next game because it's very important for us.

"Today, it was very important for us. We need to improve the way that we attack the box, the way we are crossing and when we assist well, we need to score."

No place like home for high-flying Black Cats

Analysis by Sky Sports' Richard Morgan:

If Sunderland are to confound the preseason sceptics and stay up this season, it will be because of their impressive home form, which continued on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over bottom side Wolves.

Regis Le Bris's well-drilled team recorded a fourth league win already this campaign, three of which have come at the Stadium of Light, where they are unbeaten so far.

Incredibly, no side has won more home points in the Premier League than Sunderland's 10 - making this their best top-flight home start to a campaign since 1968-69 - while only Arsenal (1) have conceded fewer home goals than the Black Cats this term (2).

And it is that kind of dominant form in front of their passionate fans that will make a trip to the northeast a tricky examination for any Premier League team this season.
