After a series of errors, Onana had lost his Premier League starting spot at United and now leaves the club following the £18.2m arrival of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on Deadline Day.
Onana made just one appearance for United so far this season, which arrived in the defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town on penalties in the Carabao Cup.
Altay Bayindir has started all three of United's Premier League fixtures against Arsenal, Fulham and Burnley so far, without keeping a clean sheet.
United signed Onana in a £47.2m deal from Inter Milan in July 2023.
Is Lammens now Man Utd's No 1?
Despite Onana now away on loan and Bayindir having made a shaky start to the season, Lammens will not start in the Manchester derby on Sunday.
Amorim confirmed Bayindir, who has started all three of United's Premier League fixtures against Arsenal, Fulham and Burnley without keeping a clean sheet, will start at the Etihad.
"Altay [Bayindir] is going to continue because we need to," Amorim said. "This game is clear. Altay will start. It's a show of faith in Altay."
"Manchester United have signed Senne Lammens with an eye to the now as well as the future," said Sky Sports News' Danyal Khan when the deal was done.
"Lammens, tipped to be Thibaut Courtois' successor in the Belgium national side, is seen as the best solution to strengthen an underperforming goalkeeping department.
"It's no secret they looked at other options, such as tried and tested Emiliano Martinez at Aston Villa, but with all factors considered, United felt Lammens was the direction they wanted to go in.
"Although Lammens has limited experience - only one season as a first-choice No 1 at Royal Antwerp - United are confident in Lammens' potential to compete immediately as well as having room to grow with a side that has the ultimate aim to win the Premier League title in three years' time."
