Police in Edinburgh have arrested and charged a 19-year-old man after Hibernian’s Marvin Bartley received alleged racist abuse on social media.
Bartley was warming up on the touchline at Tynecastle during Saturday's Edinburgh derby against Hearts when a video was recorded and published on Twitter with an offensive caption.
Both clubs condemned the abuse and the player himself tweeted: "The one thing I refuse to accept is racial abuse, so maybe it is time to take action against these small-minded, ignorant people."
The incident was reported to police on Monday, with Bartley having initially seen the video without sound and only becoming aware of the offensive nature later.
The man is due to appear at court at a later date.
Bartley's alleged abuse occurred on a weekend when a number of other players were believed to have been targeted, in person and online.
Wilfried Zaha suffered alleged racist abuse on Twitter after Crystal Palace's 1-0 win over Newcastle at St James' Park, while Wigan winger Nathan Byrne also reported a matter to police after he also suffered alleged racist abuse on Twitter.
A Brentford season ticket holder was also arrested on Saturday on suspicion of directing racist abuse at Derby's Duane Holmes in the 3-3 draw at Griffin Park.
Meanwhile, Northampton players say their team-mates were racially abused during a walk in Nottingham ahead of their 2-2 draw against Notts County.
